Seen and heard

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 11.16.2008
Ready, set, go
• The most breathtaking minute of a football afternoon at Autzen Stadium was probably when the Oregon students were admitted to the facility 90 minutes before kickoff. Several hundred of them sprinted up the ramp — and then straight downhill, 45 rows to the primo, front-row areas.
Some of them didn't use the aisles, but rather went swiftly – and dangerously – from row to row, seat to seat, gathering speed as they went. Almost miraculously, nobody was hospitalized.
Ducks dressed in style
• The Ducks rarely do anything halfway. Saturday's "blackout" at Autzen Stadium featured amazing attention to detail.
The Ducks' players wore new, customized black helmets, special jerseys and matching pants courtesy of Nike. Coaches wore black golf shirts, sweatshirts, fleeces and hats. The cheerleaders wore all-black, and ran onto the field waving a black "O" flag. The band ditched its regular uniforms in favor of black jumpsuits. University of Oregon president Dave Frohnmayer led the team onto the field on a Harley-Davidson driven by the Ducks' mascot. Guess what color he wore? All black.
6,500
• Every Oregon student got a free black Nike cap upon entering Autzen Stadium. That's about 6,500 black hats. In addition, all 58,000 seats in the stadium had black rally towels awaiting those in the sellout crowd.
Climate controlled
• For the UA, Oregon is a cold-weather destination. Due strictly to scheduling coincidences, Arizona has played just two September games in Eugene since joining the Pac-10 in 1978. The Wildcats are currently working on a four-year streak of Eugene games played in chilly November: 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012. By comparison, the Ducks have rarely had to deal with Tucson's early-season heat. Out of 14 possible games, only in 1990 and 2003 did Oregon play September games at Arizona Stadium.
Take your best shot
• A randomly selected UO fan was given a one-throw attempt to win $500,000 at the end of the first quarter. He needed to throw a football through a small hole from 25 yards. Alas, he missed the board entirely, but he was not a loser. He was awarded a year of free groceries from Safeway.
No field of dreams yet
• Memo to UA baseball coach Andy Lopez, whose team plays in Eugene in late May: Not a single piece of pipe, steel or wood — nothing — has been erected in Oregon's new baseball stadium, which is being built in prime Autzen Stadium parking lot territory.
Good hit or vicious hit?
• Shortly before kickoff, the Ducks aired a highlight tape on its massive video board. Included in the video were highlights of Oregon's 2000 game against Arizona, including Wesly Mallard's controversial hit of cornerback Michael Jolivette. Jolivette was covering a punt when Mallard blindsided him, sending the Wildcat's helmet skyward. Jolivette needed 11 stitches to cover the gash. UA coach Dick Tomey called the hit malicious. The Ducks consider it highlight-worthy.
By the numbers
1:29
Oregon's six offensive scoring drives of the first half required a lightning-quick 7 minutes 58 seconds, or 1:29 per scoring drive. And that didn't include a 31-yard interception return for a score.
