UA adds two recruits
• Arizona landed two high school teammates for its 2009 class Saturday night.
Daniel Jenkins and Terrence Miller, who both play at Moreno Valley (Calif.) Rancho Verde High School, were at Arizona Stadium for their official visits.
"They both pulled the trigger tonight," William Jenkins, Daniel's father, said via text message. "Go Cats, baby!"
Jenkins, a 5-foot-9-inch, 170-pound all-purpose back, is ranked No. 12 at his position by Rivals.com. Miller, a 6-4, 214-pound tight end, is unranked at his position by Rivals.com.
Lute tribute
• The UA's video tribute to Lute Olson was short and simple.
Between the third and fourth quarter, a montage of video highlights played on the scoreboard with rock music in the background. There was no voice-over from the announcer.
After about 30 seconds or so, a message flashed on the scoreboard — "Lute, thanks for 25 great years."
Fans reacted warmly, and started a "U of A" cheer
Hall of Famers
• Wearing a red T-shirt with a Wilbur face on it, Olympic medalist Amanda Beard topped the list of luminaries honored at halftime as the newest members of the University of Arizona Sports Hall of Fame.
In town for homecoming was Beth Botsford, who won two golds at the 1996 Olympics and swam at the UA from 2000 to 2003. So were Lovie Jung, a softball gold medalist, and former UA diver Omar Ojeda.
Marty Hurd, the Wildcats' first black baseball player, got a loud ovation from the crowd. Members of the UA's championship swim teams — both men and women — were also recognized.
Golfer Ricky Barnes and basketball guard Jason Gardner were honored in absentia.
By the numbers
10
USC quarterback Mark Sanchez has thrown a touchdown pass in all 10 of his career starts.
Baseball player
• Boston fans, hopefully, averted their eyes from USC's sideline.
Baseball player Aaron Boone, a USC alum, patrolled the Trojans' sidelines. Boone is best known for, as a member of the Yankees, hitting a Game 7, 11th-inning, walkoff home run to end Boston's 2003 season.
Boone attended a few USC practices earlier this month.
Boone played in 104 games for the Washington Nationals last year.
Band!
• Lois Broome Burke took the field with the Pride of Arizona's alumni band at halftime. Burke, 84, was cheered as the first-ever female member of the band. She graduated from Tucson High School in 1942 before attending the UA.
Rebuffed in her attempt to march with the all-male marching band at THS, Burke formed her own, all-girls band.
He said it
"We're moving. We're still moving. I like it."
