Mike Thomas plans to play this week against USC, even if it means suffering through a foot injury.
The Arizona Wildcats' senior wide receiver left Arizona Stadium in a walking boot after Saturday's 42-27 win over No. 25 California. Thomas said team doctors told him he had "some tissue swelling" in his right foot and ankle but no further damage. Thomas said he'll be ready when the Wildcats (5-2, 3-1) take on sixth-ranked USC this weekend.
"Ain't nothing going to stop me," he said. "I'm there."
Thomas appeared to bruise his right foot with 7:38 remaining before halftime. The Cats' wide receiver tried to come back toward an underthrown pass. As he pivoted, Cal cornerback Sean Cattouse dove headlong toward Thomas, hitting his leg.
Thomas had to be helped off the field, but played the rest of the game. He finished with six catches for 104 yards, including a 56-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown on the Wildcats' first possession of the second half.
Two other UA players were hurt in Saturday's game. Defensive tackle Kaniela Tuipulotu injured his left ankle in the first quarter. He finished the game, but left the locker room in a boot. Wide receiver Delashaun Dean appeared to injure his shoulder in the second half.
New Wildcat
Arizona scored another victory early Sunday, when junior college cornerback Marcus Benjamin verbally committed to the Wildcats.
Benjamin, 20, is considered one of Arizona Western College's top prospects. The 6-foot-1-inch, 200-pounder has four interceptions and 36 tackles in four games this season. He has missed two of AWC's contests because of a shoulder injury.
Benjamin is on track to graduate in December. He is expected to enroll at the UA in time for the the spring semester.
Benjamin chose the UA over offers from Arizona State, Minnesota, Colorado and Kansas State. He verbally committed to LSU in 2005, but could not qualify academically.
Benjamin was in the stands for Saturday's win over Cal. He said the victory was memorable, but not the deciding factor.
"I knew they were a great program, win or lose," Benjamin said Sunday. "I had a great, great time."
Body language kept Grigsby out
UA coach Mike Stoops said he didn't expect to bench Nicolas Grigsby for the final three-plus quarters of Saturday's win over California. But the coach said Grigsby's body language was bad.
"When you get off to a bad start, sometimes it can linger with you," Stoops said.
Still, Stoops said Grigsby — the Wildcats' leading rusher — is expected to start against USC. Keola Antolin, who gained 149 yards and scored three touchdowns against Cal, will serve as the backup.
