Heading into the final event at the coed Dorado Relays on Saturday, the Marana High School swim team trailed Ironwood Ridge by four points. Its chances of winning the event for the third consecutive year depended on the mixed 400-yard medley.
The Tigers made sure they came through in the clutch.
Their A team, comprised of two girls and two boys, won the event in a time of 4 minutes 8.91 seconds, almost eight seconds ahead of Canyon del Oro. Marana's B team finished fourth to seal the team title.
"We really won that last event on adrenaline," said Marana's Drew Hill, who also finished third in the 100 freestyle. "We gave it everything we had, because we knew we needed to win it."
The Dorado Relays featured 16 events and six teams at James Kreig Pool in Oro Valley. Marana scored 291 points, Ironwood Ridge followed with 279, and CDO had 276. Catalina Foothills was fourth (196), followed by Douglas (58) and Sierra Vista Buena (36).
The Tigers kept two streaks going Saturday. They won the event for the third straight year and won the girls water polo dribble relay for the fifth consecutive year.
"Today was awesome," senior Brindy Bringhurst said. "We kept up our winning tradition."
Bringhurst helped Marana continue its dominance. She competed in the 100-yard water polo dribble relay and the 400 mixed medley.
Both Marana coaches credited a relaxed atmosphere to the teams' success.
"We prioritize having fun over anything else, and we usually come out successful," girls coach Erin Brewer said.
"My team is great when they are relaxed," boys coach Brett Bourguet said. "We just have a lot of fun as a group."
Ironwood Ridge led until the end after winning six events. The Nighthawks girls and boys each won the 200 medley relays but couldn't hold off Marana's final rally.
CDO won the most events with seven.
Hill, one of the four Tigers who were victorious in that final relay, said he will never forget the moment.
"The team spirit we had was amazing," Hill said. "I can't stop thinking about the victory."
