HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

The two girls playing football in Southern Arizona have ambition beyond the gridiron. The Star caught up with Esther Prieto and Maile Labor to talk sports and college dreams.
Esther Prieto
Senior on the offensive line, Tucson
On playing varsity football: "I grew up with all boys and wasn't really into dolls when I was little. I came into high school and knew I wanted to play sports, but I don't like being around big groups of girls that much, so sports, like soccer and softball, were out."
On free time: "I wish I had free time. When I'm not at school doing work, I'm at practice. When I'm not at practice, I'm at work, and if I'm not at either one of those places, I'm probably sleeping."
On her favorite movie: "It has to be 'Any Given Sunday,' just because of the 'game of inches' speech that Al Pacino gives before the game."
Maile Labor
Senior kicker, Santa Rita
On sports: "My sport is actually soccer. Football (at Santa Rita) has a really good lifting program, and all the running and lifting we do has helped me in soccer and boxing."
On her favorite music: "I listen to all kinds of different music, except for country and that heavy metal, head-banger stuff. Some of the guys on the team like it before games. I know a couple of songs, but I don't listen to it regularly or anything like that."
On plans after high school: "I definitely want to go to a four-year university. I really want to play soccer through college or do something sports-related, because sports are my life."
● Prieto said she hopes to earn a scholarship to the University of Arizona and maybe someday go to medical school. ● Labor wears jersey No. 1 for the Eagles, and coach Jeff Scurran said she "gets great respect for her work ethic."
