PAC-10 FOOTBALL THIS WEEK

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 10.08.2008
Baby Harbaugh
Jim Harbaugh's wife, Sarah, gave birth to the couple's first child — a girl — on Tuesday morning.
Assistant head coach Ron Lynn pinch-hit for the Stanford coach on the conference's weekly teleconference Tuesday.
He said labor was induced, and the girl was born about 3 a.m. He said the Harbaughs had yet to pick a name for the child.
Pac-10 Power Rankings
1. USC (3-1, 1-1) — Quarterback Mark Sanchez, the conference's offensive player of the week, has thrown three touchdown passes in all four games this year.
2. Cal (4-1, 2-0) — Quarterback Nate Longshore threw three touchdown passes Saturday in his return to the starting lineup.
3. Oregon (4-2, 2-1) — Running back LeGarrette Blount practiced Tuesday; he is recovering from a strained hip flexor.
4. Arizona (4-1, 2-0)
5. Arizona State (2-3, 1-1) — Thomas Weber leads the Pac-10 with eight field goals in 10 attempts and is third in punting with 42.6 punting yards per game.
6. Oregon State (2-3, 1-1) — The Beavers, who host Washington State on Saturday, have won five straight at Reser Stadium.
7. Stanford (3-3, 2-1)
8. UCLA (2-3, 1-1)
9. Washington (0-5, 0-3) — The moribund Huskies actually lead the Pac-10 in third-down conversions at 52.3percent.
10. Washington State (1-5, 0-3)
Quotable
"I think it's just a return to how we felt. I don't think it's something new."
USC coach Pete Carroll, when asked whether his team had its swagger back after a victory against Oregon.

BEST BACK?
Cal running back Jahvid Best, who leads the nation with 215.5 all-purpose yards, is still recovering from a dislocated left elbow. He did some running Monday, Cal coach Jeff Tedford said. Toward the end of the week, he will likely try weightlifting and catching passes. Best, however, will not participate in a full practice until next week.
Tedford said it was "too early to tell" whether Best would be ready to play at Arizona after Cal's bye week, but he sounded optimistic.
"All the signs are very positive," he said.
New QB?
If quarterback Mark Sanchez cannot play against Arizona State on Saturday, USC coach Pete Carroll said he would be comfortable starting Mitch Mustain.
Mustain, a transfer from Arkansas, finished Saturday's game against Oregon for Sanchez, who was floored by a knee injury.
Two weeks ago, Mustain was listed as the team's third-string quarterback.
"We just left the competition open, and Mitch took advantage of that," Carroll said.
The Trojans might have a familiar face back Saturday. Linebacker Rey Maualuga, who missed the Oregon game after spraining his knee at OSU on Sept. 25, looked comfortable wearing a knee brace while running during practice, Carroll said.
"There's a good chance that Rey's getting back," he said.
