BERKELEY, Calif. — California running back Jahvid Best will miss at least one game with a dislocated left elbow, but the versatile speedster won't require surgery.
Best was injured in the third quarter of the Golden Bears' 42-7 victory over Colorado State on Saturday. The sophomore is third in the nation with 215.5 all-purpose yards per game, and third in the Pac-10 with 105.3 yards rushing.
Best, who fumbled twice while rushing for 85 yards against the Rams, was hurt while putting out his arm to cushion a fall.
Freshman Shane Vereen has played well in the Bears' first four games as Best's backup or his replacement in the backfield when Best lines up as a receiver.
Cal (3-1, 1-0 Pac-10) hosts ASU (2-2, 1-0) Saturday, followed by an off week. Best hopes to be available for the Bears' trip to Arizona on Oct. 18.
West Virginia QB White should start
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Pat White has a bruised thumb, but West Virginia coach Bill Stewart said his quarterback will play Saturday in the Big East opener against Rutgers.
White went to the sideline after being tackled in the third quarter of a 27-3 win over Marshall on Saturday.
White said after the game he could have continued to play if needed. With the Mountaineers (2-2) well ahead, backup Jarrett Brown replaced White.
Stewart said White practiced Sunday and the thumb on his throwing hand will be treated with ice this week as a precaution.
White has completed 73 percent of his passes this year (63 for 86) for 453 yards and seven touchdowns. He also has 369 rushing yards.
Unbeaten UConn dealt 2 big injuries
STORRS, Conn. — Connecticut coach Randy Edsall says quarterback Tyler Lorenzen is expected to be out six to eight weeks following surgery on his broken right foot.
The No. 24 Huskies lost Lorenzen and starting tight end Steve Brouse in Friday night's 26-21 win at Louisville.
Edsall said Brouse also will miss up to eight weeks after surgery on his broken right leg.
The coach said sophomore Zach Frazer will start for UConn (5-0) when the Huskies visit North Carolina on Saturday.
Extra points
● Kansas State safety Gary Chandler has been suspended indefinitely after being arrested for driving on a revoked license and obstructing the legal process.
Team spokesman Kenny Lannou said coach Ron Prince decided Monday that Chandler won't be involved in the football program until his legal problems are resolved.
Riley County Police said Chandler was charged Sunday morning after being stopped while driving a Chevrolet El Camino with a passenger in the bed. Police said Chandler at first gave a false name and when he gave his real name, officers found he was driving on a revoked license.
● Louisville quarterback Hunter Cantwell will be ready to go when the Cardinals play at Memphis on Oct. 10, coach Steve Kragthorpe said Monday.
Cantwell injured his left ankle in the third quarter of Louisville's 26-21 loss to Connecticut last week when he was hit from behind while scrambling.
