Long Beach State's pressure proves too much for Wildcats in home loss

It took Long Beach State mere seconds to set the tone.
Ninety minutes later, the Arizona Wildcats were still trying to figure out what had happened.
"Teams aren't just going to concede and give you space," UA coach Dan Tobias said after the 49ers overwhelmed and defeated Arizona 2-0 at Murphey Stadium on Friday night.
The loss dropped the Wildcats to 6-3, while Long Beach State improved to 6-2-2. Arizona hosts No. 16 UC-Santa Barbara on Sunday.
From the opening whistle, the 49ers jumped all over Arizona, using their forwards to pressure defenders and allowing Arizona very little time on the ball.
Lindsay Bullock scored both goals, grabbing the first in the 21st minute after a Kristen Kiefer shot was saved by goalkeeper Chelsea McIntyre.
With the rebound bouncing around the 6-yard box, Bullock beat McIntyre and defender Analisa Marquez to the ball and squeaked one past Savanah Le-vake's last-ditch effort to clear it off the goal line.
Bullock rose above Marquez on a 66th-minute corner kick to make it 2-0.
"If you don't clear the ball twice, it stings you a bit," Tobias said.
"The first one was a bad clearance, and the second one we just didn't mark up on a corner kick," McIntyre said. "Hopefully, we'll take this 90 minutes, let it marinate and bounce back Sunday."
Scoring opportunities were few and far between for Arizona, and only in the last five minutes of the first half did the team consistently put together passes in its opponent's half to create shots.
The second half opened with better pressure from Arizona, but the team was nearly caught by a counterattack when Hayley Bolt had a breakaway.
Only a sliding tackle from Levake at the top of the penalty area allowed the Wildcats to clear.
"I don't think it was fatigue as much as it was staying organized and focused, and getting all 11 players on the field to stay mentally focused," Levake said.
Bullock came close to adding a third goal with a pair of corner kick opportunities in the 74th (a glancing header that just went over the goal) and 77th minutes (another header that was saved by McIntyre).
Frustrated by their lack of space and Long Beach State's organization on defense, most upfield passes to forwards London King and Renae Cuellar were either too far in front of them or the 49ers were able to catch the Wildcats offside.
"We have to think the game ahead better," Tobias said. "Physically, mentally, tactically … we have to be better.
"As a coach, you always say you want to play with urgency and without haste. We didn't take care of the ball and looked sloppy sometimes, but Long Beach played a great game."
