Win in Richmond may give Johnson Chase momentum
RICHMOND, Va. — Jimmie Johnson has momentum on his side and history in sight.
Never mind that Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards dominated the regular season. The Chase is Johnson's time of the year, and the two-time defending NASCAR champion isn't turning his title over without a fight.
He won the Chevy Rock & Roll 400 Sunday at Richmond International Raceway to grab his second consecutive win, fourth overall this season, to take a big boost into the Chase for the championship.
Johnson is trying to become the first driver to win three straight titles since Cale Yarborough (1976-78).
Busch, winner of eight Cup races this year, is the top seed in the Chase. Edwards is second based on his six victories and Johnson is third. They are the only drivers in the field with multiple wins, and five of the contenders start the Chase winless on the season.
David Ragan and Kasey Kahne were the only drivers mathematically eligible to race their way into the Chase field. Ragan put on a gutsy push before ending in 32nd place.
Kahne finished 19th, giving the final Chase spot to Clint Bowyer.
The Chase field according to seeding is Busch, Edwards, Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Bowyer, Denny Hamlin, Jeff Burton, Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle, Jeff Gordon, Kevin Harvick and Matt Kenseth.
Nationwide
RICHMOND, Va. — Carl Edwards passed Clint Bowyer for the lead with 28 laps to go then pulled away through three restarts the rest of the way Sunday to win the Emerson Radio 250, his fourth win this season in the Nationwide Series.
Scott Wimmer finished second, Bowyer third and Denny Hamlin fourth.
IRL
JOLIET, Ill. — Helio Castroneves won the race, but it wasn't enough to stop Scott Dixon from taking his second IndyCar Series championship.
Castroneves came from last place Sunday to win the Peak Indy 300, but Dixon, who knew coming in he only had to finish eighth or better to win the title, took the lead with a perfect pit stop late in the race and nearly held off Castroneves for the victory, crossing the finish line inches behind the winner.
Formula One
SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, Belgium — Felipe Massa was declared the winner of Sunday's Belgian Grand Prix after Lewis Hamilton was penalized for cutting a corner during a late duel with world champion Kimi Raikkonen.
Hamilton crossed the line 14.4 seconds ahead of Ferrari's Massa in a dramatic finish that saw Raikkonen crash into a barrier, but the McLaren driver was penalized 25 seconds for an illegal maneuver.
McLaren said it will fight the penalty.
