In Scottsdale, Chaparral's Brandon Martin caught a 32-yard lob in the end zone with 3.9 seconds remaining to to drop Cienega to 1-1.
The Firebirds drove 56 yards on four plays in the final 27.8 seconds to win the game. Both teams scored touchdowns in the final minute.
With a 16-14 lead, Chaparral could have locked the game up with 46 seconds left, but couldn't convert a third-and-one. Cienega got the ball on its own 27 and Seth Mejias-Brean wasted no time, finding Justin McMurray for a 71-yard TD pass on the very first play.
"That was an amazing throw by (Mejias-Brean) …," Chaparral QB Spencer Stone said. "But we knew we had 32 seconds to score, and that's what you worry about then."
Mejias-Brean finished with 282 yards passing and three TDs, but a desperation heave as time expired fell short of the end zone.
