Nickson accounts for 2 TDs as Vanderbilt wins home game vs. ranked teamSTAFF AND WIRE REPORTS
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 09.05.2008
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Chris Nickson threw for a touchdown and ran for another, and Vanderbilt finally beat a ranked opponent on its own field Thursday night, upsetting No. 24 South Carolina 24-17 in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.
Vanderbilt (2-0) had made it a habit of knocking off SEC teams on the road, but the Commodores had not upset a ranked team in Vanderbilt Stadium since Sept. 19, 1992, a 31-9 victory over then-No. 25 Mississippi 31-9.
Vanderbilt won its second straight against Steve Spurrier after losing its first 14 games against him at Duke, Florida and South Carolina.
The Commodores picked off two of Chris Smelley's passes and sacked him four times, recovered a punt that bounced off a South Carolina player and blocked a field goal attempt.
● Penn State coach Joe Paterno kicked one player off the team and said three players will not face Oregon State this weekend because of separate, undisclosed off-field issues.
Paterno said backup defensive back Willie Harriott has been kicked off the team for an undisclosed violation of team rules.
Paterno says defensive linemen Maurice Evans and Abe Koroma, and tight end Andrew Quarless will sit out when Oregon State visits 19th-ranked Penn State on Saturday.
● Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells will not play when the third-ranked Buckeyes take on Ohio on Saturday.
Wells injured his right foot in last weekend's 43-0 victory over Youngstown State. He has not practiced with the team this week and has spent much of the time wearing a protective boot.
"Beanie won't go this week," Tressel said Thursday afternoon. "I feel good about his progress, but it wasn't enough progress to practice through yesterday."
Asked if he worries that Wells may not be available when the Buckeyes play at No. 1 Southern California on Sept. 13, Tressel added: "No, not at all. Not at all. But that's easy to say today."
UA BASKETBALL
Shumpert joins Wildcats
The Arizona Wildcats formally announced the addition of freshman forward Darnell Shumpert to the 2008-09 basketball roster, meaning the former Santa Rita standout has been cleared to play this season.
Shumpert was offered a scholarship for this season last week by UA coach Lute Olson, after being offered only a chance to walk on to the program last winter. He averaged 11 points, 10.9 rebounds, 10.6 blocked shots and 2.8 assists per game last season at Santa Rita.
"Darnell is a player who can help us," Olson said. "He's got good size, good hands and moves well."

Suns to use solar power
PHOENIX — The NBA's Phoenix Suns plan to use solar panels for part of the power at their home arena.
The new photovoltaic system will consist of more than 1,100 panels. It will produce enough energy to reduce the team's power usage by the equivalent of 26 home games each season, Suns general manager Steve Kerr said Wednesday.
● Usain Bolt will be looking to beat his 100 meters time tonight for the third time this season when he races in a field that includes Asafa Powell at the Van Damme Memorial in Brussels, Belgium.
Bolt is looking to improve on his world record of 9.69 seconds, set at the Beijing Olympics.
World champion Tyson Gay pulled out late Thursday because of the cold weather and a hamstring injury.
