• Hanley Ramirez of the Marlins needs one stolen base for his third straight season with at least 30. And with 28 home runs, he could join Preston Wilson as the only Marlins to join the 30-30 club. Wilson did it in 2000.
• Braves right-handed reliever Rafael Soriano had elbow surgery on Thursday and is expected to be ready by spring training next season. Soriano had an ulnar nerve transposition and a small bone spur removed from his right elbow by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. Soriano, who has been on the 15-day disabled list three times this season, was 0-1 with three saves and a 2.57 ERA in 14 games.
• The Phillies called up pitcher Fabio Castro from Triple-A Lehigh Valley before starting a four-game series at the Cubs on Thursday night. Right-hander Andrew Carpenter returned to Double-A Reading after pitching a scoreless inning in the Phillies' 6-3 loss to the Mets on Wednesday.
• Nationals right-hander Shawn Hill is being shut down for the season after he experienced swelling in his right elbow during rehabilitation from an arm injury. Hill, on the disabled list since June 25 with a sore forearm, is going to Pensacola, Fla., to have his arm examined by Dr. James Andrews on Friday. Washington general manager Jim Bowden said the latest setback was a new injury. Hill was on a throwing program, including bullpen sessions, and was projected to rejoin the Nationals in September before this injury set in.
• The Dodgers reinstated right-hander Cory Wade from the 15-day disabled list and designated right-hander Tanyon Sturtze for assignment.
