The Tucson Toros are close to returning.
The city and former Tucson Sidewinders owner Jay Zucker have an agreement in principle to rent Hi Corbett Field next summer, Tucson Parks and Recreation director Fred Gray said.
Zucker either has or is near an agreement to bring an expansion Golden Baseball League team to Tucson, and the team would be named the Tucson Toros, Gray said. The Toros played in Tucson from 1969 to 1997.
Golden Baseball League commissioner Kevin Outcalt confirmed earlier this month that league officials have talked with Zucker about an expansion team in Tucson. Outcalt expressed his interest in Tucson's baseball history and working with Zucker, who sold the Sidewinders in June 2007.
Reached Wednesday, Outcalt said he cannot comment further until Monday when Zucker has called a news conference at Hi Corbett Field.
That is the same day the Tucson Sidewinders conclude their final season in Tucson. The Sidewinders will move to Reno, Nev., next season.
Zucker declined comment Wednesday night.
The Golden League is an independent baseball league formed in 2005. Teams are in Yuma; Chico, Calif.; Fullerton, Calif.; Long Beach, Calif., St. George, Utah; Reno; and Canada. The season runs from late May to the end of August.
Zucker's rent for Hi Corbett is undetermined at this time, Gray said, and it depends on the types of services Zucker seeks for games. The menu of options is similar to the agreement the city had with the Arizona Heat professional softball team, which folded after the 2006 season.
