Leinart's hold on starting job slips

OAKLAND, Calif. — JaMarcus Russell's starting job is assured even after an inconsistent preseason performance. That might not be the case with Matt Leinart.
Leinart threw three interceptions in less than two quarters before the Cardinals offense opened things up in the second half of a 24-0 victory over the Raiders on Saturday night.
Leinart entered the game with the lead over Kurt Warner in the competition for the Cardinals starting job. Coach Ken Whisenhunt may have to rethink that following this performance by Leinart.
Leinart's first pass of the night was a deep one to Larry Fitzgerald that floated up long enough for safety Michael Huff to pick it off.
The performance did not get much better after that. Leinart led the Cardinals on a field goal drive midway through the first quarter, but that was it as far as positives go.
On a rollout in the second quarter, Leinart stared right at cornerback Stanford Routt and then threw it his way for the second interception. His final pass was a floater to Anquan Boldin that backup Rashad Baker intercepted.
Leinart finished the game with only one more completion to his receivers than he had to Raiders defenders, going 4 for 12 for 24 yards.
The Cardinals offense got going in the second half, scoring on a 14-yard run by rookie Tim Hightower and a 67-yard run by J.J. Arrington on the first two possessions of the third quarter. Brian St. Pierre added an 18-yard touchdown pass to Leonard Pope in the fourth quarter.
● Jets 10, Giants 7: In East Rutherford, N.J., Pro Bowl defensive end Osi Umenyiora was carted off the field with a knee injury in the second quarter of the New York Giants' loss to the Jets on Saturday night.
The injury overshadowed a first-half quarterback duel between Brett Favre and Eli Manning that ended up being a penalty-filled snoozer.
The Giants said Umenyiora's left knee "locked up" with 10:48 left in the half on an incomplete pass by Favre on third down. Umenyiora could not put any weight on the leg. X-rays revealed no fracture, but further examinations were planned today.
● Lions 26, Browns 6: In Detroit, Brady Quinn was lackluster in his first NFL start, and the depleted Browns were roughed up for the second time in a week.
The Lions' Kevin Smith overcame a sluggish start with a 35-yard touchdown run, and backup kicker Dave Rayner improved his chances of finding a job with four field goals.
Quinn was 14 of 24 for 106 yards without a score, turnover or a pass longer than 16 yards, playing in place of injured Derek Anderson.
● Panthers 47, Redskins 3: In Charlotte, N.C., Jason Taylor limped off the field with a worrisome knee injury, and the Redskins quickly unraveled against the Panthers' 1-2 punch of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.
The running backs combined to rush for 201 yards and two touchdowns, and Jake Delhomme threw for two scores.
Taylor, the six-time Pro Bowl pick, was injured when his right knee bent awkwardly as he got caught in the middle of the pile following Williams' 5-yard run midway through the second quarter. The team called it a sprain, and the defensive end, acquired from Miami last month, did not return.
● Saints 13, Bengals 0: In Cincinnati, the Saints sacked Carson Palmer three times in the first half, knocking him out of the game with a bloody nose and a cut lip.
The Bengals could not move the ball or protect their franchise quarterback in the first half. Palmer left the game when Kevin Kaesviharn got to him on a third-down safety blitz with two seconds left before halftime.
● Dolphins 24, Chiefs 0: In Miami, Ted Ginn Jr. had a 59-yard punt return for a touchdown and caught three passes for the Dolphins.
The speedy Ginn, taken No. 9 overall in the 2007 draft, is finally displaying the go-to skills of a top NFL receiver. He finished with 29 yards receiving in his third solid performance of the preseason.
● Jaguars 23, Buccaneers 17: In Tampa, Fla., Tampa Bay's Jeff Garcia was intercepted twice but threw a second-quarter touchdown pass before departing.
Garcia, whose future with the Bucs was in question this summer while the team pursued a possible trade for Brett Favre, missed most of training camp because of a strained right calf that also sidelined him for Tampa Bay's first two preseason games.
Garcia completed 11 of 18 passes for 79 yards, including a 10-yard TD throw to Michael Clayton on Garcia's final play.
● Rams 24, Ravens 10: In St. Louis, the Rams' first-string offense ended its long slump with two touchdowns.
Troy Smith's illness forced the Ravens to put their quarterback derby on hold.
Marc Bulger's 4-yard pass to rookie Keenan Burton with six minutes to go in the second quarter gave the Rams starters their first score in three preseasons under coach Scott Linehan.
Joe Flacco, the Ravens' first-round pick this year, played the entire game and failed to generate much until the second half while going 18 for 37 for 152 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions.
● Steelers 12, Vikings 10: In Minneapolis, the Vikings kept the pressure on Ben Roethlisberger, surrounded Willie Parker and held Pittsburgh's starting offense to three points before the Steelers rallied after halftime.
Parker was limited to 18 yards on 10 carries. Roethlisberger completed 10 of 17 passes for 65 yards.
