Former Wildcat Iguodala to remain with 76ers after signing six-year dealthe associated press
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 08.18.2008
PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers re-signed former Arizona Wildcats star Andre Iguodala on Sunday, giving the forward a six-year contract.
Iguodala, who was a restricted free agent, helped the 76ers reach the playoffs for the first time in three years. An official announcement is expected today.
Iguodala averaged 19.9 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 2.1 steals in 82 games last season. He struggled in the playoffs against Detroit, averaging 13.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 5.0 assists.
The 24-year-old Iguodala could've played this season under terms of a $3.8 million, one-year qualifying offer and become an unrestricted free agent next year.
Retaining Iguodala was a top priority for Philadelphia, which lured two-time All-Star forward Elton Brand away from the Los Angeles Clippers earlier this summer
Selected with the ninth overall pick in the first round of the 2004 draft, Iguodala has averaged 14.8 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists in his career. He's also been durable, missing just six games in four years.
LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL
Mexican throws perfect game
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Jesus Sauceda of Matamoros, Mexico, struck out all 12 batters in the first perfect game at the Little League World Series in 29 years on Sunday.
Sauceda needed to pitch only four innings, instead of the usual six, in the 12-0, mercy-rule victory over Emilia, Italy. It was the fifth perfect game at the Little League World Series and the first since Chao-An Chen of Taiwan tossed one in 1979.
Sauceda also had a big day at the plate. He went 3 for 3 with six RBIs, including a grand slam in the third.
In other action Sunday, Trey Quinn tossed a no-hitter for Lake Charles, La., in a 9-0 shutout of Jeffersonville, Ind.; Tokyo defeated White Rock, British Columbia, 9-3; Maracaibo, Venezuela, shut out Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, 12-0; and Waipahu, Hawaii, beat Tampa, Fla., 10-2.
TENNIS
Argentine keeps streak alive
WASHINGTON — Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro won his fourth straight tournament Sunday, beating Viktor Troicki 6-3, 6-3 to take the Legg Mason Tennis Classic championship.
The 19-year-old, ranked No. 19 in the world, has won his last 19 matches since June 25, when he was bounced from Wimbledon in the second round.
Del Potro was playing in his fourth final in a little more than a month. Troicki was playing in the first of his career and was also slowed by pain in his lower back.
● In Mason, Ohio, second-seeded Nadia Petrova dominated unseeded Nathalie Dechy, 6-2, 6-1, to win the Western and Southern Financial Groups Women's Open on Sunday.
Petrova, who reached the quarterfinals at Wimbledon this year, clinched the win with a forehand return on her second match point to earn her first championship since the 2007 Tier II Paris indoor tournament. It was her first outdoor title since the Tier I Berlin Open on clay in 2006.
● When the WTA Tour rankings come out officially today, Ana Ivanovic will be back on top — a place she will hold for at least two weeks. The 20-year old Serb, who held the No. 1 ranking for nine weeks from June 9-Aug. 11, moved past compatriot Jelena Jankovic.
Rafael Nadal, who captured the men's singles gold medal Sunday at the Beijing Olympics, will also become No. 1 today — snapping Roger Federer's 4 1/2-year reign atop the rankings.
