• The Marlins purchased the contract of veteran catcher Paul Lo Duca from Triple-A Albuquerque on Saturday. Lo Duca signed a minor-league deal with Florida on Aug. 8 after being released by the Nationals following the trading deadline. This will be the 36-year-old's second stint with Florida. He was traded by the Dodgers to the Marlins for right-hander Brad Penny in 2004. He was dealt to the Mets after the 2005 season.
• Billy Wagner felt discomfort in his pitching elbow after throwing a simulated game Saturday, and the Mets' closer won't come off the disabled list Monday as expected. Wagner, sidelined with a strained left forearm, threw about 20 pitches in what was supposed to be his final step before rejoining the Mets on Monday, the first day he's eligible to come off the 15-day DL. The Mets have struggled to piece together a shaky bullpen without their All-Star closer, turning to Aaron Heilman, Pedro Feliciano and Scott Schoeneweis in save situations.
• Giants left-hander Jonathan Sanchez was scratched from his start against the Braves on Saturday and placed on the 15-day DL because of a strained left shoulder. The move was made retroactive to Tuesday. Sanchez was 8-9 with a 4.53 ERA and 133 strikeouts in 135 innings.
• The Reds signed draft pick Yonder Alonso to a $4.55 million contract and $2 million bonus at the deadline Friday. Alonso could have returned to the University of Miami or live in Alex Rodriguez's New York apartment and play in an independent league. "I could actually have stayed with him and he'd help me through the whole thing," said Alonso, who has known A-Rod for years. "He's a very cool guy." Alonso said Rodriguez encouraged him to sign with the Reds if possible.
