TORONTO — Trent Edwards might not know all the words to "O, Canada," just yet, but the quarterback hit all the right notes in helping the Buffalo Bills make a successful debut in their new northern home away from home.
Shaking off a sluggish performance in the Bills' preseason opener last week, Edwards was near-perfect in two series, going 9 for 11 for 104 yards and two touchdowns, in Buffalo's 24-21 victory over the Steelers on Thursday night.
It happened at Toronto's Rogers Centre and allowed the Bills to make a strong first impression in kicking off their five-year, eight-game series in Canada's largest city and financial capital.
The small-market franchise has adopted the city as its second home to generate additional revenue. The Bills will become the NFL's first franchise to begin playing an annual regular-season game outside the United States when they face Miami at Toronto on Dec. 7.
● Eagles 24, Panthers 13: In Philadelphia, Jake Delhomme fired a pass over the middle for a touchdown that was overturned. The result did not matter so much. Delhomme's surgically repaired right elbow passed the test.
Delhomme was 9 of 14 for 54 yards in his first real action since ligament-replacement surgery in October, but Tony Hunt's 51-yard touchdown run with 2:15 left led Philadelphia to victory.
Cardinals' Warner may start Saturday
FLAGSTAFF — Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said Thursday he is leaning toward starting Kurt Warner at quarterback in Saturday night's preseason game in Kansas City against the Chiefs.
"The one thing I want to make sure we do is make sure Kurt gets some time" with the first team, Whisenhunt said.
Warner, who took over as the starter last season when Matt Leinart suffered a season-ending collarbone injury on Oct. 7, did not play in last week's preseason opener against New Orleans.
Whisenhunt said defensive end Darnell Dockett and safety Antrel Rolle will sit out Saturday's game, rookie wide receiver Early Doucet is doubtful, and rookie cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is day-to-day.
Extra points
● Nine-time Pro Bowl safety John Lynch took a physical with the Patriots, who need secondary help after being hit by injuries. Coach Bill Belichick, who rarely identifies players brought in for visits, said Thursday he met Wednesday with Lynch and that the former Broncos star was given a physical.
● Plaxico Burress expects to be on the field for the Giants' season opener Sept. 4 against Washington. Burress disclosed his foot condition Thursday and said he is basically learning how to run again at 31 with the aid of orthotics.
Three months ago, the team advised Burress to use orthotics to help reshape both feet. He said it took time to get fitted and he did not start using them until recently.
● Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman missed practice Thursday for the third consecutive day because of a virus, and his availability for the preseason game Saturday against the Rams is in question.
Merriman said he had strep throat and a heavy fever. He had trouble breathing while battling the illness but said he was feeling much better Thursday. Merriman also has been dealing with an ailing knee.
