Boldin unhappy but reports to Cardinals camp

FLAGSTAFF — Wide receiver Anquan Boldin and defensive tackle Darnell Dockett put aside their contract squabbles and reported to the Cardinals' training camp on time Wednesday.
Boldin slipped into the dormitory at Northern Arizona University without talking to reporters; Dockett stopped to say he never really thought about staying out of camp.
The Cardinals have a running test today, then begin workouts on Friday.
Coach Ken Whisenhunt said he did not believe the contract issues would be a distraction in preparations for his second season with Arizona.
"I know they're professionals. They're good football players, and I think that we're a team" Whisenhunt said.
Boldin's displeasure stems from the new four-year, $40 million contract — with $30 million guaranteed — fellow Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald received in March. Boldin's current contract averages $4 million per season in a deal that runs through 2010.
Army cadet can't sign with Lions
ALLEN PARK, Mich. — Caleb Campbell was a day away from practicing with the Lions and taking a step toward his dream of playing in the NFL.
"He was issued a helmet, ready to go," coach Rod Marinelli said Wednesday.
Now, Campbell is closer to joining his fellow West Point graduates in Iraq or Afghanistan.
The U.S. Army revised its interpretation of U.S. Department of Defense policy two weeks ago regarding soldiers playing professional sports, requiring cadets to complete two years of active duty before applying for a release. Campbell and the Lions did not officially receive notice of the change until the eve of training camp.
Campbell agreed to contract terms, but the seventh-round pick did not sign the deal. The Lions will retain his rights until the 2009 draft, but he will not be eligible to play until 2010.
"Obviously, he's disappointed," said Marinelli, a Vietnam veteran. "But I obviously know what he's about. He got his orders, and he's ready to report."
Extra points
● Saints wide receiver Marques Colston, whose 168 catches are more than any NFL receiver through his first two seasons, agreed to a three-year extension that could keep him in New Orleans through the 2011 season, general manager Mickey Loomis said Wednesday night. Colston compiled 2,241 yards receiving for 19 touchdowns in his first two seasons.
● Devin Hester, who has 11 punt and kickoff returns for touchdowns in his first two seasons, skipped the Bears' first training camp practice Wednesday in a holdout. Hester, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, was placed on the Bears' Reserve/Did Not Report list.
● The Bears and first-round pick Chris Williams agreed to a five-year contract Wednesday on the first day of training camp. Williams, an offensive tackle from Vanderbilt, was the No. 14 choice overall.
