Snyder set to return today after 'crazy' injuryArizona Daily Star

PHOENIX — Of all the injuries he has endured, Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Chris Snyder ranks his testicular fracture at the top in terms of sheer pain.
"Stuff like that's crazy. You never expect that to happen," said Snyder, who was hurt when a foul ball hit him on June 30. The D-backs hope to activate him from the disabled list today.
And to think he finished the inning after he was injured.
"Adrenaline was going," he recalled, shaking his head in disbelief. "That was the only thing."
Snyder went 2 for 5 with a three-run home run and four RBIs in a rehab stint with Single-A Visalia on Friday. He said he felt good playing the full nine innings and has not been experiencing pain.
The biggest challenge was "just to go the full game and be able to walk afterwards," he joked.
He also survived a scary moment early in the game when a foul ball hit him.
"Everything held up good," he said.
Snyder bought dinner for his Visalia teammates, who teased him by giving him the silent treatment after he homered.
Move to be made
With Snyder soon to be activated, the D-backs will need to make another move. Manager Bob Melvin noted his club has kept three catchers before, and that could happen again.
Right-handed reliever Chad Qualls missed Friday's game because of tightness in his back and will be out another day or two, Melvin said. Qualls has experienced tightness in his back earlier this season, but on the other side, according to Melvin.
"We'll look into everything, how Qualls is, a lot of variables," Melvin said.
Injuries hit bullpen
Doug Slaten, the D-backs' only left-handed reliever, went on the disabled list Saturday with a strained right knee. He left Friday's game because of the injury after allowing the go-ahead home run to the Dodgers' James Loney in the 11th.
Slaten underwent an MRI and will likely be sidelined for at least three days, Melvin said.
To take Slaten's spot, righty Billy Buckner was recalled from Triple-A Tucson. He caught a 10 a.m. flight Saturday from Tacoma, Wash., where the Sidewinders are playing. He was originally scheduled to start today for Tucson and can provide the D-backs with longer outings from the bullpen.
Buckner was 5-8 with a 4.73 ERA for Tucson and allowed two runs in 2 2/3 innings with the D-backs in mid-June.
"I definitely wanted to get back up here and try to contribute as soon as I could," he said. "I wasn't sure when it would happen, but I'm happy it's sooner rather than later."
Fitting replacement
With Eric Byrnes (hamstring) possibly out for the season and Justin Upton (oblique) on the DL, Alex Romero has received more time in the outfield. Melvin praised the former Sidewinder's work ethic.
"He's prepared on the bench to come in any situation and he works very hard on his defense, as hard as anybody I've been around," Melvin said.
