Antoine Cason is eager to start his NFL career. Just when it will happen, however, remains up in the air.
The San Diego Chargers' first-round pick remains unsigned and, because of that, might not report to training camp today with the team's other rookies.
"I don't know what the plan is," Cason told the Star on Saturday. "I'm planning on being there, but if things don't work out, it's out of my hands."
Cason, the Arizona Wildcats former star cornerback, isn't alone. Just five of this year's 31 first-round picks have signed, though more deals are expected daily.
On Friday, the New York Jets signed tight end Dustin Keller, the 30th overall pick, to a five-year contract.
Cason, the 27th overall pick, stands to make as much as $12 million over five years, with more than half of that money guaranteed.
The Chargers have been active in recent days, signing third-round pick Jacob Hester and sixth-round pick DeJuan Tribble to four-year contracts.
Cason, the team's lone remaining unsigned pick, said he hopes to join them soon. The Chargers will hold their first full-squad workout on Friday.
"I'm too young to be stressed," he said. "The way I see it, it's going to happen. There's no need to stress over it.
"I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing to prepare myself for the upcoming season," Cason added.

Favre in Green Bay, mum about return
GREEN BAY, Wis. — Brett Favre stuck to the script, declining to address his public rift with the Green Bay Packers in an appearance at Lambeau Field on Saturday.
In town to present former teammate Frank Winters for induction into the Packers' Hall of Fame at a banquet Saturday night, Favre briefly spoke with reporters about his former center's career before abruptly stepping off the stage and ducking out a side door.
"There's a lot of people … around the NFL and the United States probably thinking Brett wouldn't show up today," said Winters, who asked Favre to present him several months ago. "But I knew deep down inside he would, and he told me he would be here, and it's a great honor."
Extra points
● Defensive lineman Chris Long, the No. 2 overall selection in April's NFL draft, agreed to a long-term contract with the Rams on Saturday and will join his teammates when they report to camp on Thursday.
Terms of the deal were not immediately determined, although coach Scott Linehan indicated that it covers at least five years.
Long, the son of NFL Hall of Famer Howie Long, was the Rams' highest overall draft selection since 1997, when they took tackle Orlando Pace with the No. 1 pick. Long is expected to start at right end.
● The Washington Redskins and rookie tight end Fred Davis agreed to a $3.5 million, four-year contract on Saturday, a day before training camp opens.
The deal includes a $1.8 million signing bonus for the 6-foot-4-inch, 247-pound Davis, who was taken in the second round, 48th overall, out of USC in April's NFL draft.
