Stewart free to buy team after release from Gibbs Racingstaff and wire reports

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Joe Gibbs Racing will release Tony Stewart from his contract at the end of the season, ending an incredibly successful decade in which they won two championships and turned the organization into one of NASCAR's best.
Stewart's release, which J.D. Gibbs called "bittersweet," was announced by the team.
Stewart's departure opens the door for him to buy a NASCAR team, and he is expected to hold a news conference today at Chicagoland Speedway to discuss his future plans.
● Dario Franchitti will be in a Nationwide Series race this weekend in Joliet, Ill. Chip Ganassi Racing shuttered Franchitti's Sprint Cup Series team last week because of a lack of funding.

Bulls sit Rose in summer game
ORLANDO, Fla. — The Chicago Bulls held No. 1 overall pick Derrick Rose out of Wednesday's game with tendinitis in his right knee. Rose said the injury, which dates to his college days at Memphis, wasn't serious and he fought for court time.
"I was mad today, but I knew they wasn't going to play me, so I was just going to have to suck it up," Rose said.
● Elton Brand signed with the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday, the biggest move on the first day NBA deals could be completed. The 76ers were able to sign Brand to a big deal because they sent forward Rodney Carney and a future No. 1 pick to Minnesota as part of a trade that cleared an additional $2 million in salary cap space.
● DeSagana Diop signed a five-year, $31 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday, six months after Dallas sent him to New Jersey.
● Milwaukee Bucks center Andrew Bogut will sign a five-year, $72.5 million extension later this week, his agent said Wednesday.

Capitals reward Fedorov, Laich
ARLINGTON, Va. — The Washington Capitals agreed to terms with Sergei Fedorov on a one-year, $4 million contract and rewarded forward Brooks Laich's career season with a three-year, $6.1 million deal Wednesday.
Fedorov, the 1994 league MVP, was one of three trade deadline acquisitions that helped the Capitals end a five-year playoff drought last season.
● Coach Ken Hitchcock signed a three-year contract extension with the Blue Jackets on Wednesday, saying he welcomes the chance to turn the only team not to make the playoffs into winners.
