PHOENIX — Diana Taurasi hit a three-pointer with 42.6 seconds left, then blocked a shot on the other end to help lift the Phoenix Mercury over the Houston Comets 99-94 on Tuesday.
Taurasi scored 30 points and got into the WNBA record books, reaching 3,000 career points in fewer games than any other player. Taurasi needed 151 games to reach that mark. Seattle's Lauren Jackson held the record, hitting 3,000 in 162 games.
Houston built a 14-point lead in the first half.
Tina Thompson scored 23 points, and Sancho Lyttle added 18 points and nine rebounds for the Comets, who had won the last two and eight of 10.
Michelle Snow made a shot in the lane with 54 seconds remaining to give Houston a 90-89 lead, but Tamecka Dixon fouled Cappie Pondexter on the next possession. Pondexter, the league's second-leading scorer, made a free throw, missed a second, and Mercury forward LeCoe Willingham grabbed the rebound. She got the ball to Tangela Smith, who found Taurasi open on the perimeter for a big three.
NBA
Ex-Cat Adams signs with Raptors
TORONTO — The Toronto Raptors signed guard Hassan Adams to a two-year deal Tuesday.
Adams last played in the NBA in 2006-07, when he averaged 2.9 points and 1.3 rebounds in 61 games with New Jersey.
Adams, 6-foot-4-inch, 220-pound native of Los Angeles, played in Italy last season. He attended the Raptors' free agent camp in June. Adams is known as a tenacious defender. He was selected in the second round, 54th overall, in the 2006 NBA draft by the Nets.
Adams was added to the Raptors' roster Monday for the Las Vegas summer league. Toronto's entry will play its first game Saturday.
● Michael Beasley griped about some calls, tumbled after missing layups, then shook his head in disappointment after a rebound bounced off his outstretched hands.
His first summer-league game drew raves. In his second, Beasley looked like a rookie again.
One day after scoring 28 points in his much-hyped debut, Beasley finished with only nine points Tuesday in Miami's 90-81 summer-league victory over New Jersey. Beasley, the second overall pick in last month's draft, missed all but one of his 13 shots from the field and collected nearly as many fouls (seven; there is no automatic disqualification in summer league) as points.
NASCAR
Truex penalized 150 points
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Martin Truex's bid to make the Chase for the Championship took a severe hit Tuesday when NASCAR penalized his Dale Earnhardt Inc. team 150 points for taking an illegal car to Daytona.
Truex's car failed its initial inspection last week at Daytona because the car failed to fit NASCAR's roof template. NASCAR officials seized the car and sent it to their Research and Development Center in Concord.
The 150-point penalty dropped Truex from 14th in the standings to 18th. The top 12 drivers make the Chase, and there are eight races remaining.
In addition, crew chief Kevin "Bono" Manion and car chief Gary Putnam were suspended from the next six races and placed on probation until the end of the year.
HORSE RACING
Curlin leaving dirt for turf
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Curlin is set for his turf debut in the first step of an ambitious attempt that could prove he is the best horse anywhere — regardless of the surface, competition or continent.
The reigning Horse of the Year will run in the $500,000 Man o' War Stakes over the turf at Belmont Park on Saturday, part of a plan by the owners that would make him the sport's all-time leading money winner and secure a place among the racing's pantheon.
Curlin has won nine of 12 career races on dirt, including the Preakness and the Breeders' Cup Classic last year and the Dubai World Cup in March. After his last victory, in the Stephen Foster Handicap on June 14, trainer Steve Asmussen said the 4-year-old colt would be pointed to the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in Paris on Oct. 5.
The Arc, run on turf, is considered the premier race in Europe.
