Three weeks ago at the Swim Invitational in Omaha, Neb., a rehearsal meet for the U.S. Olympic trials, Arizona Wildcats junior Lara Jackson won the 50 meter freestyle with an stunning time of 25.14 seconds, the eighth-fastest time in American history.
That led UA assistant coach Rick DeMont to suggest that the trials would not be over "until we see how Lara does; she could win the whole thing.''
On Saturday morning in the 50 freestyle preliminaries of the trials, Jackson broke the American record at 24.50. Incredibly, by the time Jackson had finished her semifinal swim Saturday night, her record had been broken twice.
Dara Torres at 24.38 and Jessica Hardy at 24.48 knocked the UA standout from the record book entering tonight's much-anticipated final.
Jackson qualified fourth overall at 24.94, and Tucsonan Lacey Nymeyer was fifth at 25.06, setting up a nationally televised final on NBC that could be the most dramatic 50 women's freestyle in American history.
The first two finishers will qualify for the Olympic team in that event.
Jackson, who was initially an unrecruited walk-on at Arizona, won the NCAA title in the 50-yard freestyle in March.
Jackson is one of four UA/Tucson swimmers to be among the 20 fastest 50 free swimmers in U.S. history.
Former Wildcat Amy Van Dyken, 24.87, and ex-Salpointe Catholic swimmer Colleen Lanne, 25.39, are joined by Jackson and Nymeyer on the list of fastest American freestyle sprinters.
