Sidewinders manager Bill Plummer summoned catcher Robby Hammock to his office shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Hammock emerged from the closed-door meeting a few seconds later. He raced to his locker and began packing his bags.
Never mind the 7 p.m. game at Tucson Electric Park — Hammock was about to hit the road to Phoenix.
The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled Hammock from Triple-A after catcher Chris Snyder went on the disabled list for a testicular fracture. He was hit by a foul ball Monday.
"I'm not sure what's going on," Hammock said of how long his stint will be. "But it's nice to go back and help out, maybe get a chance to play."
With Hammock gone, Tucson beat Fresno 8-1.
Hammock hit .315 in 28 games after the D-backs optioned him to Tucson when Chad Tracy returned from the DL. Hammock has been day to day with a groin injury. He had been scheduled to catch Tuesday for Tucson.
The D-backs also promoted reliever Connor Robertson, adding him to the 40-man roster after left fielder Eric Byrnes went on the DL with a hamstring injury. Robertson, a right-hander in the trade that brought Dan Haren to Arizona in the off-season, allowed a run in three innings in his D-backs debut Tuesday.
Robertson posted a 1.80 ERA in June and a 3.86 ERA for the season.
"They were going with one of our hottest relievers and the fact he was also involved in that trade probably had a little to do with it," pitching coach Mike Parrott said. "You obviously want to get guys to the big leagues you traded for."
All-Stars picked
Plummer told infielders Emilio Bonifacio and Jamie D'Antona early Tuesday they had been named Pacific Coast League All-Stars. D'Antona's .383 average and 108 hits both ranked second before he sat out Tuesday.
Plummer said D'Antona's left knee sometimes bothers him, but D'Antona called the soreness "just normal wear and tear."
"It's more a pain in the butt than anything," he said. "There's nothing bad."
Bonifacio was hitting .306 and will also play for the World Team in the Futures Game on July 13. The Triple-A All-Star Game is July 16.
Buckner back
In his third outing since the D-backs optioned him to Tucson, Billy Buckner threw eight shutout innings Monday.
Parrott said Buckner's focus was better; he allowed 10 runs in the previous 10 innings.
Buckner admitted he endured a mental battle, "a little bit," after returning to Tucson.
"It's definitely different going from 45,000 (fans) to whatever we had here the other night, but you've got to get yourself psyched up, however you do it," he said. "I was definitely into the game. I was happy to get out there and excited to pitch again."
First-rounder nears return
Max Scherzer, who has been on the DL since June 18 because of shoulder inflammation, said he is eyeing a July 19 return. He has been throwing from 60 feet.
"It feels great," he said.
Inside pitch
● Plummer was ejected in the sixth after arguing Don Kelly's called strikeout. Plummer noted the umpiring crew has called three of the last four series.
"That's too much. This crew has thrown me out all three times," he said.
● Evan MacLane worked 8 1/3 innings Tuesday and allowed only a third-inning home run, falling just short of the Sidewinders' first complete game this season.
