Ex-Lancer Brown cards a 1-under 69, takes 1-shot lead in Futures tourneythe associated press

DECATUR, Ill. — Salpointe Catholic graduate Sara Brown took the lead Friday after the second round of the Michelob Ultra Duramed Futures Players Championship with a 1-under-par 69.
Brown, a Michigan State alum, has a one-stroke lead over M.J. Hur, who tied the low round of the day at 3-under 67. Brown has a two-round total of 136. Five players were tied for third at 139, including 2008 tournament winners Vicky Hurst (70) and Kristina Tucker (70).
Brown had a solid round with just 27 putts.
"My putter wasn't working as well as yesterday, but I still feel very confident with it," said Brown.

Busch on pole after rainout
BROOKLYN, Mich. — Kyle Busch will start from the pole Sunday in the Lifelock 400, thanks to rain Friday that washed away qualifying at Michigan International Speedway.
The rain began falling after 11 of 45 drivers had completed qualifying attempts on the two-mile oval, and NASCAR was forced to fill the race field by points, giving series leader Busch his third pole of the season. He will be joined on the front row by Jeff Burton, with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and defending race winner Carl Edwards in Row 2.
● The Southwest Late Models, USA Modifieds and Factory Stocks will be racing tonight at USA Race Park. Gates open at 5 p.m.; racing begins at 7. USA Race Park is located off Interstate 10, exit 268, 1.6 miles south on Craycroft Road, which turns into Los Reales. For more information, call 574-8515.

Veteran play-by-play man dies
SAN DIEGO — Charlie Jones, the deep-voiced sportscaster whose career as a play-by-play announcer spanned 38 years for ABC and NBC, died Thursday. He was 77. Jones died of a heart attack at his home in the La Jolla district of San Diego, his longtime agent, Martin Mandel, told The Associated Press.
NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol called Jones "one of the great pioneers of NBC Sports. His work in particular on the NFL, golf and the Olympics left a lasting legacy."
● Jasmin Day of Arizona finished seventh in the long jump Friday at the NCAA track and field championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Day cleared 5 feet 10 3/4 inches. Also, Shevell Quinley was 13th after the first day of competition in the heptathlon.
● In Miami, the Florida Panthers hired Peter DeBoer as their new coach Friday, giving him a multiyear deal. DeBoer — a highly touted junior coach from the Ontario Hockey League's Kitchener Rangers — also was courted by Ottawa DeBoer replaces his boss, Jacques Martin, who was stripped of his duties in April but is still the team's general manager.
● In Ottawa, Craig Hartsburg is the new coach of the Senators, who were swept out of the playoffs in the first round this spring — a year after reaching the Stanley Cup finals. Hartsburg, who previously coached Anaheim and Chicago, took over from Senators GM Bryan Murray, who finished the season after coach John Paddock was fired in late February.
● In Cincinnati, former Bengals receiver Chris Henry has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL. The Bengals released Henry on April 3 after he was arrested for a fifth time. Henry is scheduled for trial June 24 in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court on charges of assault and criminal damaging. Henry is accused of punching a man in the face and breaking his car window with a beer bottle.
