NL inside pitch

• Reds shortstop Jeff Keppinger will be sidelined for four to six weeks with a broken left kneecap, leaving Cincinnati without its best clutch and most consistent hitter this season. Keppinger fouled a pitch off his knee during a 5-3 victory over Florida on Tuesday night. He stayed in the game for two innings but took himself out when the pain and swelling in the knee started limiting his range.
• Mets righty Pedro Martinez threw 55 pitches Wednesday during a simulated game in Florida, the latest step in his recuperation from a hamstring injury. Martinez tossed four innings against minor-leaguers and fielded his position at the team's complex in Port St. Lucie, Fla. The club would not reveal a timetable for Martinez's return, but general manager Omar Minaya said he hopes Martinez is weeks away, not months.
• The Cubs finalized a deal with free agent outfielder Jim Edmonds, 37, who was released last week by the Padres. "Hopefully, Jimmy still has something left, and it was just a bad start," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said. Reed Johnson has played well in center field, and Hendry said Edmonds will have to earn playing time in a platoon setup. To make room for Edmonds, the Cubs optioned outfielder Felix Pie to Triple-A Iowa.
• Pirates catcher Ryan Doumit will be sidelined for at least a month after breaking his left thumb on a passed ball. Doumit was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday after an examination in Pittsburgh confirmed the break. Surgery will not be necessary for the team's top offensive player so far this season.
