Ex-Wildcat Hollowell among 3 Olympic cuts

staff and wire reports
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 03.29.2008
Former UA pitcher Alicia Hollowell was one of three United States Olympic team softball players who did not make the final 15-player roster, coach Mike Candrea announced Friday.
Hollowell and two others were named to the replacement squad, and still could travel to Beijing if a player on the roster is injured.
But Hollowell, the 2006 Women's College World Series Most Outstanding Player, was not the highest-profile player to miss the cut.
Lisa Fernandez, a three-time gold medalist and considered one of the greatest players in the game's history, also was left off the team. Fernandez had taken three years off to have children. She is 37.
Catcher Jenny Topping was the third player cut.
Candrea, the UA coach on a leave of absence to run the national team, must submit the formal roster to the U.S. Olympic Committee by July 1.
Three former Wildcats remain on the active roster — pitcher Jennie Finch, center fielder Caitlin Lowe and infielder Lovie Jung.
Salpointe Catholic grad Tairia Flowers also made the team.
