IT'S Tinseltown
• Throughout all four of Thursday's games, a man danced spastically in the rich seats — in the front row, near the baseline on the north end of the court. Every half, he changed outfits — his pink sport coat and joker hat being the most memorable. He keeps his clothes in a 99-cent store bag under his seat.
What gives?
"I'm Rental Man," said Philip Parks. "I'm a superhero."
Parks works for Westside Rentals, a company that rents homes and condos in the Los Angeles area. His boss buys the good seats, and he spends his days dancing for some free publicity for the business.
The Seal Beach, Calif., native been doing it for about 19 months, be it at sporting events or on busy Los Angeles intersections. He even went to the Super Bowl in Glendale.
Parks is also looking to be discovered by a talent scout.
Only in L.A.
Buckets of fun
• After the UCLA-Cal game had become irrelevant, Bruins fans in Section 113 got a little creative.
They cheered for … Colonel Sanders?
With KFC a sponsor of the tournament, the impersonator helped mediate halftime games such as a chicken-wing eating contest and a chicken dance-off.
During the UCLA game, he walked into the UCLA section to chants of his name. He shook hands and acknowledged the applause. In the media room, he ate — gasp! — pasta.
The real Col. Harland Sanders died in 1980, several years after selling the fried chicken giant he founded.
Looking for Lute
• Lute Olson is turning into a regular Sasquatch.
Everybody's speculating about if, or when, they will see him.
The UA head coach was rumored to be attending Thursday night's game — FSN even mentioned it on their broadcast Wednesday night.
Lute did not attend Thursday's game, and will not attend any games this weekend, team spokesman Richard Paige said.
The best place to find him will be at Saturday's Pac-10 Hall of Honor luncheon honoring Miles Simon, among others. Both athletic director Jim Livengood and spokesman Paige said Olson plans on attending.
Star watch
• Nick Lachey, the former boy-band heartthrob and Jessica Simpson's ex, came to Staples Center to watch his beloved USC Trojans around noon Thursday.
Rick Neuheisel, the new UCLA football coach, sat courtside to watch the Bruins in the next game.
Former USC coach George Raveling has been a frequent viewer, as has former Stanford coach Mike Montgomery. Montgomery, however, is working for FSN.
Former NBA stalwart Danny Ainge, now a Boston Celtics executive, is here as a scout.
Oooooh, Tony!
• Our favorite T-shirt that was donned by three female Washington State fans — "Our Coach is Hotter Than Your Coach," a reference to Tony Bennett's good looks.
• The Pac-10 is offering sneaky good ticket prices for today's two semifinal games — there are 2,000 upper-deck seats available seats at $35 for the whole session.
• Before Cal played UCLA, USC coach Tim Floyd said that if you could name a better team nationwide that was No. 9 in its conference, he'd "eat your hat."
