Cyndi Reardon knows it takes optimism, time and a healthy savings account to build a commercial enterprise. She combined those three elements with her business experience to open a spa in Continental Ranch.
Indigo Day Spa debuted in May on North Silverbell Road between North Continental Reserve Loop and North Coachline Boulevard.
"I had the money, and when I found this building, it was really perfect for what I wanted to do," said Reardon, 53.
The spa is not her first foray into business ownership. Reardon's hair-designing career started 28 years ago. Since then, she has owned several hair salons in Tucson. She went back to school about seven years ago to become a physical therapist and worked for a rehab hospital for five years.
The building was basically a shell when she signed the lease. Reardon, with the help of an architect, divided the space into two massage rooms, a room for the aestheticians, two stations for hair designers and a waiting area.
When the interior was built, Reardon and her husband, Dean, set up furniture, decorated the walls and added the finishing touches.
"My husband has been very helpful," she said. "I couldn't have done it without his support."
Jody Walker, 26, is an aesthetician and one of eight employees.
"Cyndi focuses on the positive, and that makes you want to do your best," she said. "I strive every day to make the customer feel appreciated."
Armed with a Mother's Day gift certificate, Shari Madden, 53, went in for a massage and a facial on a recent morning.
"It's very exciting," she said. "It was the neatest Mother's Day gift she (her daughter) could have ever given me."
Madden is a kindergarten teacher at Twin Peaks Elementary School.
"I was very tense and I feel very relaxed now," she said after her massage.
The spa delivered a respite from her day-to-day world.
"I like the atmosphere. It's calm and quiet," she said. "I baby-sit grandkids all the time and I got a day off today."
The spa is open seven days a week to give working people in the area plenty of opportunities to pamper themselves.
"Life is so stressful," said Reardon. "It's good to have a place to go to get a massage, a facial and feel good."
