NEW TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Relaxing atmosphere helps Tangles clients feel at home

The earth-colored facade of Tangles Salon and Spa gives way to a spacious interior of mauve-and-maroon walls with matching tile floors.
The design of the full-service salon at North Silverbell Road and West Wade Road is intended to make people feel relaxed, to think only of comfort, said owner Hilda Pesqueira.
"People tell me that they like it," she said.
Pesqueira, 56, said she achieved a lifelong goal when she and her husband, Fernando, opened Tangles a year ago in February.
She expected business to trickle in, but Pesqueira said area residents have been so receptive that she has just hired a fifth hairstylist who will soon join her regular staff of eight.
Family members are crucial to the success of the business, she said.
Pesqueira's daughter, Sandra Pesqueira-Hacker, 32, is a hairstylist as well as the salon's manager. Mother and daughter collaborated on the salon's design.
"A lot of our clients tell me they love the atmosphere, they love the fact that they can get everything done in one place," Pesqueira-Hacker said.
"Everything" as in a new hairstyle, facial, body wax, massage, pedicure and manicure. The salon offers several packages that includes some or all those services, plus lunch.
Spa packages range from $160 to $350.
"Those are really popular for birthdays and other special occasions," the salon owner said.
Clients also can create their own spa packages or choose individual services. A haircut starts at $45; a 60-minute, full-body massage is $60 and a facial starts at $75.
Another of Pesqueira's daughters, Clarissa, 27, fills in at the reception desk when she's needed, her mother said.
And although Pesqueira's husband is not on the payroll, he drops by to help out each Thursday — when he's not working as finance manager at a car dealership.
"He makes sure we have all the supplies we need," said Pesqueira, who married her high school sweetheart 36 years ago.
Pesqueira got her Arizona cosmetology license the summer after graduating from Pueblo High School in 1970, she said.
She's been cutting and styling hair on and off ever since.
"I took some time off to raise a family," she said of her two boys and two girls.
Before she opened Tangles, Pesqueira earned a living giving haircuts at various assisted-living facilities.
Even though she now has a full-service salon to operate, she has no plans to stop working with the elderly residents she's known for years throughout the Tucson area. She considers them special clients.
"I just love doing it," she said.
