Other Rodeo Parade incidents

• At last year’s parade, Tucson First Lady Beth Walkup was injured when a pair of runaway horses crashed into the rear of the horse-drawn carriage in which she and her husband, Mayor Bob Walkup, were riding. The accident left her with severe neck pain and put her under the care of a neurosurgeon.
• In 1995, a 19-year-old woman fell off her horse after it spooked. The horse stepped on and bruised the woman’s leg.
• In 1992, the second year the parade was held in its current southside location, four people were injured when spooked horses bolted from the street and into the dense crowd. The incident occured just west of East Irvington Road and South Park Avenue - the same location as Thursday’s incident.
• Five people were slightly injured in 1986 when two runaway wagons careened down West Pennington Street near North Stone Avenue within minutes of each other.
• In 1982, a Tucson police officer chased down a runaway carriage holding a 9-year-old girl. He stopped it after three blocks, just shy of the crowd.
Two young girls also suffered minor injuries when they were stepped on by a horse that backed into the crowd.
• In 1978, two horses pulling a wagon were spooked and ran toward the crowd, narrowly missing the packed grandstands.
• In 1976, a paint pony broke away from its owner and ran several blocks before being caught.
