Four players arrested on alcohol-related chargesarizona daily star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 09.18.2007
The four UA football players suspended indefinitely by coach Mike Stoops were identified Monday morning as students arrested following a fraternity-party scuffle late last week.
University of Arizona police early Friday cited quarterback C.J. Sedoris, 19, for suspicion of driving under the influence, driving with a blood-alcohol content of .08 or higher, operating a vehicle with liquor in his body and possessing fake identification.
Quarterback Tyler Lyon, 20, linebacker Cole Graybill, 20, and defensive back Kyle Monson, 19, were all cited for minor in possession of alcohol.
The players — none of whom have played in a game this season — will practice with the team but are not allowed to dress on game day or travel, Stoops said. The Wildcats open Pac-10 play at No. 6 California on Saturday.
All four participated in Monday's practice.
"We had four kids make very selfish and immature decisions, and they'll face the consequences," Stoops said.
Officers responded to a phone call at 12:34 a.m. reporting a fight at the Sigma Pi fraternity house, 1525 E. Drachman St., according to a police report obtained by the Star. No punches were thrown, but the report states Graybill threatened to bash a Sigma Pi member's head with a brick he was holding.
The players left the house, with Sedoris driving a white Ford F-150 truck registered to Lyon's father. Sedoris was pulled over at 12:39 a.m. as he drove west on East Mabel Street, past North Euclid Avenue, according to the report.
Sedoris initially said he was his teammates' designated driver, but later admitted to consuming "two or three or four" beers in cups at the fraternity house, according to the report.
Sedoris was taken to the UAPD station, where he registered .106 and .119 percent on breathalyzer tests. Both are above the legal limit of .08 percent. Sedoris is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 15.
Lyon, Graybill, Monson and two females were cited and released. Officers removed an open case of Natural Light beer and a bottle of Jägermeister from the truck.
The coach first announced the suspensions following Saturday's loss to New Mexico but would not name who was involved. When asked about their identities again Monday at his news conference, Stoops would only say that one player was on scholarship and the other three were walk-ons.
Lyon, a redshirt freshman, is on scholarship as the third-string quarterback. Sedoris, Graybill and Monson are walk-ons.
Friday's incident marks the third reported alcohol-related incident this year involving UA football players. Starting quarterback Willie Tuitama was cited for minor in possession in February after officers responded to squealing tires and loud noise coming from an on-campus parking lot.
Defensive end Louis Holmes was arrested July 1 following a scuffle at The Pussycat Lounge, a Scottsdale-area nightclub. Officers said alcohol was a factor in Holmes' arrest.
