Resistance is futile. You can't escape that Friday - the day after Thanksgiving - is the big kahuna of shopping days. If you just can't hang with the traffic on the road or in the malls and prefer to stay home in your pj's, consider shopping the Web.
Online, there are plenty of rockin' sites. Gift-wrapping is often available, and presents can be delivered right to the recipient. Pretty darn easy.
You don't get the holiday shopping excitement and often have to cough up shipping charges, but some may prefer the convenience.
Here are some shopping suggestions for this holiday season:
Amazon.com
What: Aside from discounted books and music, you can get gourmet foods, electronics, toys, jewelry, clothes. It's one-stop shopping, really.
When you're buying for . . . anyone.
Fun Finds: A great selection of kids' music, and you can listen before you buy, a definite plus. There's also a "Lord of the Rings" store with extended DVDs, books, games - it's a hobbit paradise.
Shipping: You're pretty much guaranteed free shipping with book, video and music purchases - just buy more than $25 worth of stuff. You can also find specials in the other shopping categories.
Nordstrom.com
What: You don't get the soothing, live piano music like you would at the bricks-and-mortar upscale department store in Scottsdale Fashion Square, but the easy-to-navigate site makes shopping a breeze. Find designer clothes and shoes, makeup and accessories and gifts.
When you're buying for . . . the diva or the dapper dude.
Fun Finds: Fluffy sheepskin-lined slippers from Ugg ; a great selection of sleek men's leather jackets.
Shipping: Nordstrom is known for its customer service, and that's true of the site, too. Reasonable rates ($3.95 for standard shipping up to a $25 purchase) and free exchanges. Returns are also easy.
Shopkitson.com
What: The operative word here is "hip." Everything from the clothes to the accessories to the bath products oozes coolness.
When you're buying for . . . the fashion plate - male or female.
Fun Finds: Lounge pants with Cookie Monster's face on the front and "me want cookies" written across the tush; "The Villain's Guide to Better Living," a goofy book that includes choosing the right career path (mad scientist or corporate bastard) and mingling with evil cohorts (party games included).
Shipping: Not too terrible - $6.95 for ground up to a $35 purchase.
Vosgeschocolate.com
What: Vosges Haut-Chocolat is known for its inventive flavors - a truffle with coconut extract, milk chocolate and curry powder, anyone?
When you're buying for . . . the adventurous chocolate lover.
Fun Finds: A $3,900 yoga retreat to Mexico; caramel marshmallows.
Shipping: Pricey. Ground shipping runs about $11 to $14. And if you're shipping to warm places, the order gets upgraded.
Zippergifts.com
What: Zipper, which has retail stores in Los Angeles and Brooklyn, has lots of modern items. But this isn't stuffy, contemporary shopping; it's whimsical and fun.
When you're buying for . . . that hard-to-buy-for person.
Fun Finds: Glam-A-Phone, a real phone that comes with gems and a faux boa for decorating; a cast-aluminum doorstop with a wire ring attached so you can hang it on the doorknob when not in use.
Shipping: A little high - it'll cost you $7 for up to a $25 purchase.
