A man suspected of an Illinois murder was arrested by federal and local authorities in Tucson Saturday, according to a news release from the U.S. Marshals Service.
Edwin Algarin, 26, is being held at the Pima County jail awaiting extradition to Illinois, the release says.
Authorities suspect that in 2005 Algarin, a member of the Latin Cobras gang, chased down a rival gang member and shot him three times in the back as he pounded on the door of a Chicago home begging for help.
At the time he was on parole for attempted robbery, and he has a criminal history that includes dealing drugs, forcible sexual assault, theft, burglary and trespass, according to the release.
A fugitive task force that included U.S. Marshals along with other local law enforcement arrested Algarin at an apartment about 6 p.m. at an apartment near North Stone Avenue and Fort Lowell Road, the release says.
Authorities found a small amount of marijuana when the arrested Algarin and could tell the drug had been freshly burned before they arrived, according to the release. Several other adults and young children were in the apartment when Algarin was arrested.
