Possible school closures are on the agenda for a Tuesday night special meeting of the Tucson Unified School District’s governing board.
Along with a half-hour set aside for talk of school closures, the board is scheduled to file notice of a public hearing related to school closures.
E-mails and rumors are already circulating regarding the possible closure of Corbett Elementary School, 5949 E. 29th St..
A press conference is being scheduled for Tuesday, said TUSD spokeswoman Chyrl Hill Lander and Governing Board President Alex Rodriguez. Neither would say which school or schools is being targeted for closure.
TUSD administrators are scheduled to meet with the editorial staff of the Daily Star on Monday afternoon to discuss school closures.
“What this is going to tick off is a 60-day public comment period. No decision has been made,” Rodriguez said. “The district has been exploring the concept of consolidating one or more schools to better align resources and improve student achievement.
“Tomorrow, the superintendent will present to the board his rationale for doing this,” he added. When asked specifically where plans for schools closures originated from, Rodriguez said: “This is his specific initiative.”
Also up for discussion is the possibility of a proposed November 2008 budget override, school attendance boundaries, an updated timeline for the superintendent search and the appointment of a new finance director.
