The Tucson Unified School District Governing Board tonight is scheduled to appoint members of the committee that will help find a new superintendent.
The TUSD Superintendent Search Advisory Committee will consist of 22 individuals and no more than 10 will be current TUSD employees, according to documents.
Superintendent Roger Pfeuffer's contract expires June 30. Pfeuffer had been retired for almost two years when he was appointed interim superintendent in 2004 following the resignation of the previous superintendent, Stan Paz. In September 2005, the Governing Board extended Pfeuffer's contract through the end of the 2007-08 school year.
Though a preliminary timeline of the search said candidates would be identified by the Oct. 9, 2007, board meeting and a new superintendent appointed by Dec. 11, 2007, the board plans to appoint a new superintendent at its March 11 meeting, said Chyrl Hill Lander, TUSD spokeswoman.
The committee will be comprised of one member from 22 different groups, advisory boards, committees and departments connected to TUSD, including each employee union, committees like the Blue Ribbon Committee, and a representative from each department within ethnic studies.
Nominations for the committee were due Jan. 9. The committee will meet Feb. 2 and 3 to review résumés and applications. The meetings will be facilitated by a search consultant from the Arizona School Boards Association, a non-profit organization directing the superintendent search.
Ten candidates for superintendent will be selected and their applications forwarded to the governing board. The ASBA has received eight complete applications, Lander said, and is in the process of receiving four more. Superintendent applications will be accepted until Jan. 25, she said.
