Grade-schoolers' 'Spirit Day' today
Nearly 400 students in grades K-5 at Myers-Ganoung Elementary School will learn real-life business lessons during a daylong Junior Achievement "Spirit Day" today.
Sponsored by a grant from the Alcoa Foundation, Spirit Day will feature volunteer teachers from the University of Arizona Eller College of Management.
Each of the 24 classes from Myers-Ganoung Elementary will participate in a full day of five lessons delivered by the undergraduate students.
This is the third year Eller students have taught Junior Achievement to students at Myers-Ganoung.
While the school has held Junior Achievement Spirit Days in the past, this is the first year the effort has been financially supported by an outside sponsor. The Alcoa Foundation awarded Junior Achievement $15,000 in grant money to support efforts at the elementary school, and at a middle school later this year.
The Junior Achievement curriculum consists of five lessons per grade level, with each level building upon the previous one. Where kindergarten lessons explain personal economics through short stories and simple activities, fifth-grade lessons examine how businesses operate in this country and explore issues affecting businesses
