Federated Department Stores announced Thursday that the Robinsons-May stores in Arizona will become Macy's next year.
Federated is acquiring the stores through a pending merger with The May Department Stores Co. that will result in a $30 billion retail colossus.
The only Tucson shopping center containing both a Federated store and a May store is the Tucson Mall, where both Robinsons-May and Macy's are located. Whether one of those stores eventually will be closed as a duplicate is unclear. Calls to the Tucson Mall and Federated representatives were not returned.
"I'd have to refer all questions to Federated; all we know is what's in the press release," said Robinsons-May spokeswoman Milinda Martin.
In a statement issued Thursday, Federated identified 68 duplicate locations in 66 malls, saying it would put those stores on the block next year. No Tucson stores were on the list, but Robinsons-May stores in Mesa and Phoenix will close.
Federated said it planned to consolidate the staffs from duplicate stores, hiring all managers in good standing from both stores while keeping worker layoffs minimal.
"We will honor the pledge made previously to May company associates that there will be no work force reductions or job eliminations as a result of the merger prior to March 1, 2006," Federated CEO Terry Lundgren, a University of Arizona graduate, said in a statement.
That means Tucson shoppers will be able to browse Robinson-May wares for one last holiday season. Then in fall of 2006, Federated will usher in the strategy of adding 330 Macy's stores nationwide.
May stores including Filene's, Hecht's, Foley's, Kaufmann's and Strawbridge's are also slated to become Macy's. Lord & Taylor will retain its name. Federated has not decided whether to convert Marshall Field's into the Macy's brand.
