When it comes to learning about the Civil War, fifth-graders at Manzanita Elementary School, 3000 E. Manzanita Ave., take a hands-on approach.
For about two months, the students researched important events of the era and the people who lived through them. Their studies culminated in the school's 9th annual Civil War simulation on Friday.
In the morning, close to 90 students donned period costumes and acted out vignettes based on the information they had gathered.
The vignettes covered stories from both the Union and Confederacy sides, and featured prominent figures such as Abraham Lincoln and Gen. Robert E. Lee.
"The reason we do such a hands-on type of lesson is to enhance their learning so it becomes more alive and meaningful," said fifth-grade teacher Elizabeth Pagles. "The students actually live the history. When they realize that actual people did these things and made decisions that affect our lives now, it becomes much more real. The knowledge becomes more meaningful and part of who they are."
The audience of parents, family members and schoolmates moved from scene to scene, while the actors remained in their places.
Following the two morning performances, everyone was treated to a Civil War luncheon featuring foods similar to those consumed during that time period. The afternoon began with a game of rounders, a sport very similar to the baseball that we know today.
In the end, students left with a little acting experience, full bellies, some exercise and lots of knowledge about an important time in the foundation of the country.
