When it comes time to send children off to school for the first time, it can be quite an experience for the new student and the parents.
To help ensure it's a good experience, elementary schools in the Catalina Foothills School District have been holding "Kindergarten Show and Tell" events to help prepare all involved.
Parents of almost 30 students attended the most recent show and tell Monday at Canyon View Elementary School, 5725 N. Sabino Canyon Road.
"It really helps the kids to have a picture of what school will be like," said Canyon View Principal Marta Gunderson. "And it's good for us to know who's coming in the spring, so we can be well-planned for the fall."
After the initial introductions are made, the children are taken to one of the kindergarten rooms to listen to a story and work on activities with the teachers while their parents remain behind to learn what the school has to offer.
After questions are addressed, a tour gives the parents a feel for where their children might be learning in the near future.
"I think it's an important step in acclimating him to school," said Leigh Burkey, of her son, Eli Couchman, whom she registered to attend kindergarten at Canyon View this fall. "The curriculum appears to be solid and the classes are well-equipped. It's nice to see what to expect."
