Fifty-five students at Esperero Canyon Middle School will perform Disney's "Alice in Wonderland Jr.," which is based on the classic book written by Lewis Carroll. Disney makes a junior version of the musical for grade-school students.
Out of 90 students who auditioned, 55 were chosen based on their singing, acting and dancing skills. Julia Higgins, the co-director, says some students already have experience in performing in front of an audience, while this may be a new adventure for others.
Catalina Foothills Community Schools helps with the costs of costumes, sets, scripts and other items for the show. Each student pays $60 to be in the play. The money goes toward the cost of producing the show.
Ryann Hansen, 11, plays one of the Alices in the play. She said she wasn't nervous during the audition because she has performed in theater groups before and is used to the audience.
"It'll be a fun, exciting, energetic play," says Ryann. Her favorite characters are Tweedledee and Tweedledum because "some of their lines are just crazy."
The play opens Feb. 28 at the school, 5801 N. Sabino Canyon Road, and runs for two nights only. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students. All proceeds go to Catalina Foothills Community Schools.
