A Catalina Foothills High School freshman received a head start in paying for his college education by winning a scholarship for making a video that promotes a discount coupon book.
Sam Sandweiss, 15, received an oversized check on Thursday for a $10,000 scholarship after winning the "My 30 Seconds of Entertainment Video Contest", sponsored by Entertainment Publications. Entertainment Publications puts out Entertainment books, or coupon books that students can sell for fundraisers.
The contest called for students to make a commercial for the books. The students who took part in the contest were selling the books for various fundraisers, said company spokeswoman Tamara Oliverio.
Sandweiss and two friends, Kate Bradley, 14, and Dylan Souza, 14, created a video that shows an Entertainment book ripping itself apart and forming pictures of items people could save money on if they purchased the book. Bradley and Souza are also freshmen at the high school.
"The topic was using the Entertainment book for something it's not usually used for," said Sandweiss, who was selling the book to raise money for the Falcon marching band.
Sandweiss, Bradley and Souza will split the scholarship money, he said.
People will be able to view the winning videos on Monday at www.my30secondsofentertainment.com.
