This week's hot 5 events
Bergman/Antonioni screenings at the Loft on Sunday afternoon
C'mon, now. You didn't think that the Loft Cinema would let the July 30 deaths of Ingmar Bergman, right, and Michelangelo Antonioni go unnoticed, did you?
On Sunday afternoon, the nonprofit theater will screen a double-feature in honor of the arthouse titans beginning at 1 p.m.
First up is Bergman's "Persona" (1966), which the Loft describes as a classic psycho-sexual identity thriller and "a real head-trip of a movie that can't easily be forgotten." It stars Liv Ullman and Bibi Anderson.
Next up at 3 p.m. is Antonioni's "Blow-Up," a film from 1966 starring David Hemmings as a photographer who thinks he may have photographed a murder. Vanessa Redgrave co-stars as the mysterious model who crosses his path.
Tickets are $5 for one film or $8 for both.
Alejandro Fernández here for AVA show next Thursday
Alejandro Fernández, below, is squeezing in a show at Casino del Sol's AVA next Thursday night amid performances in Phoenix, Los Angeles and other much larger cities.
Fernández, nicknamed "El Potrillo" or "the little colt" by fans, is the son of legendary Mexican Ranchera singer Vicente Fernández.
And while the 36-year-old Alejandro has been known to belt out traditional material here and there, his latest efforts, including his 2004 album "A Corazón Abierto" and his 2007 release "Viento a Favor," are 100 percent pop.
Fernández even pulls out a duet, "Amor Gitano" with American sensation Beyoncé, on his latest release.
Fellow honored son Pepe Aguilar, whose legendary father was Antonio Aguilar, also will perform at the AVA, on Oct. 17.
Fernández starts his show at 7:30 p.m., and tickets are $40-$150 through casinodelsol. ticketforce.com.
Get up for Bear Down Fridays
OK. What happens in Utah stays in Utah.
The UA Wildcats have a good chance of winning Saturday's first home game (although NAU's Lumberjacks did win their first game — 47-0 against Western New Mexico).
But what you can count on this football season is a pretty serious pep rally in Main Gate Square from 4 to 7 p.m. every Friday before a home game (except for Nov. 15 when the UA hosts Oregon on a Thursday).
On tap each week: live music, UA band and cheerleaders, free parking (in the Tyndall Garage at East Fourth Street and North Euclid Avenue with merchant validation), a chance to win a $250 shopping and dining spree, and much more.
Special this Friday: lively local roots rockers the Carnivaleros, inflatable gladiator jousting, a hula-hoop contest, Tony the Tiger and UA Athletic Director Jim Livengood.
Irish Dance and Music Competition Saturday
It will be an Irish dance extravaganza Saturday as Tucson's first Old Pueblo Feis, Irish Dance and Music Competition gets under way in the Tucson Convention Center's ballroom area.
The event, put on by the Irish Stepdancers of Tucson, will feature dancers from across the nation competing to find the best of the best. The event is free to watch, with plenty of food and activities available. The competition runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 991-3605.
Vikki Carr, Aida Cuevas, Mariachi Cobre at TCC
Some Tucson favorites will be in town Saturday for the 2007 Harmonía Fiesta, a concert to help raise money for the St. Augustine Cathedral.
Vocalists Vikki Carr and Aida Cuevas and Mariachi Cobre are lending their talents so the church can fix up its placita and hall in time for its dedication to Monsignor Arsenio Carrillo in October. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. and will take place in the Tucson Arena. Admission is $40-$80 through Ticketmaster, 321-1000.
