Tie on your apron and grab your sauce ladle: A national pizza-making contest for chefs 12 and younger will be held Oct. 7 at an East Side pizzeria.
Café Bama Pizzaria, 9431 E. 22nd St., will host the contest. The competition will begin at 11:30 a.m. and participants should be there around 11 a.m.
Pizzeria owner Mika Abera said her restaurant was one of 35 individually owned pizzerias selected nationwide.
"I think it's going to be wonderful fun,'' she said. "This is the first year they're doing it and hopefully it will continue.''
Tucson participants will use a kid-sized pie and garnish it with their favorite ingredients at the pizzeria, where it will be baked and judged.
The kids will receive a T-shirt and chef hat, Abera said, and the winning pizza pie will be named by its creator and added to the pizzeria's menu.
One grand-prize winner randomly selected from winners nationwide will be awarded a visit by one of the World Pizza Champion Team members to learn some "pizza acrobatic tricks."
The World Pizza Champions recently performed pizza-pie acrobatics on "Master of Champions," a television reality show.
About 35 people will be able to participate here in Tucson, Abera said. Kids can sign up by visiting Cafe Bama Pizzaria or calling the store at 733-2500.
If the sign-up sheet is full, kids can take part in an online pizza-making contest by going to www.lindsayolives.com after Sunday and reading the rules to submit their recipes.
