Tucsonans bothered by military aircraft noise will have a chance to speak up Wednesday.
The Military Community Compatibility Committee, a group looking for ways to reduce noise generated by Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, is holding a special session to hear public concerns and gather ideas from those affected by military operations.
"We want to make sure we understand the issues before we start looking at solutions," said Tahnee Robertson, organizer and mediator for the event.
The committee, made up of more than two dozen neighborhood representatives, military and government advisers and others, is trying to find practical ways to reduce friction between D-M and city residents. Officials hope to have recommendations ready by May.
Group members have been meeting in work sessions the past few months, laying the groundwork for their efforts. Wednesday's public meeting is the first of two that will be held, with the second likely in the spring.
So far, the committee has heard presentations from the air base, from neighborhood groups, and from a Tucson Botanical Gardens representative who stressed the need for high-quality outdoor recreation opportunities, Robertson said.
The committee was set up by the U.S. Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution, an agency mediating dozens of environmental disputes around the country, including the noise impact of tourist flights over the Grand Canyon. The institute is part of the Tucson-based Morris K. Udall Foundation.
