Five large Southern Arizona high schools will move to new regions next fall.
The Arizona Interscholastic Association released new region alignments Wednesday for the 2009-2011 school years.
● Flowing Wells and Sabino will move to the Sonoran Region from the Kino in Division 4A-I. Sabino will join athletic mainstays Catalina Foothills and Canyon del Oro in this competitive region.
● Marana will switch from Sonoran to Kino. The Kino Region will cover a large geographical area, including Nogales and Vail.
● Cholla will move to Class 4A-II Gila from Class 4A-I Sonoran.
● Casa Grande, currently in the 5A-I Southern, will move to the 5A-I Pima Region, which includes schools from the Phoenix metro area. That leaves Sierra Vista Buena, Tucson and Salpointe Catholic in a three-school region.
Additionally, Salpointe, Ironwood Ridge, Desert View and Rio Rico successfully appealed their placements to stay in the same division and region as this year.
