Ironwood Ridge quarterback Chris Harris mounted as impressive a two-minute drill as any quarterback at any level of football.
But the Nighthawks' six-play, 82-yard drive in 33 seconds was not enough to overcome a mountain of miscues as host Phoenix Pinnacle (1-0) defeated Ironwood Ridge (0-1) in a 5A II nonregion game.
"We killed ourselves," said Ironwood Ridge coach Gary Minor.
Down by four with little more than half a minute to play, Harris connected on a 39-yard bomb to Scott Campbell.
After downing the ball to stop the clock, Harris connected on passes of 18, 12 and 13 yards. With :02 left, the Nighthawks had moved to Pinnacle's 7-yard line. Harris' final pass fell incomplete, giving the Pioneers an unlikely victory.
