Cienega sophomore pitcher Alexa Cash got a good night's rest, warmed up early and effectively and felt prepared entering the Bobcats' first-round game of the Class 4A-I state tournament on Saturday.
Still, Cash battled some nerves in the first inning against Millennium, then settled in to retire the next seven batters en route to Cienega's 6-0 victory.
"She was a little off finding her zone, but I wasn't worried. I knew she could come back," coach Eric Tatham said.
Cash struck out 12, allowed two hits and hit two batters in seven innings.
"I was a little nervous," Cash said. "I've never thrown in a state game. It was fun.
"I felt I could have thrown better. I knew the bats would come around, and my catcher (Emily Pohl) helped me with what I had."
Cienega will play No. 11 Peoria in Monday's quarterfinals at Rose Mofford Complex in Phoenix.
Cienega (24-8) scored three runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Bobcats junior Amanda Taylor was 3 for 3 with two singles and a two-run triple.

● Sahuaro 4, Lake Havasu 0: At Sahuaro, Kira White struck out 12 in a one-hit shutout — narrowly missing a perfect game — and Logan Hall hit a go-ahead home run.
White did not allow a runner until giving up a single with two outs in the sixth inning.
"I was mixing it up and everything seemed to be working," White said. "You have to bring your A-game this time of year."
Hall belted a solo homer in the fourth for a 1-0 lead. Lauren Hostetler hit a two-run single in the fifth. Hanna Parrish, who went 3 for 4, reached base all four times and had three stolen bases, drove in a run in the sixth.
"Good things will keep happening for us if Hanna hits like that," coach Steve Sanchez said.

● Sabino 2, Phoenix Sunnyslope 1: At Sabino, Chelsea Slama capped a two-out, eighth-inning rally with a game-winning single to right field that scored Shawna Comeaux.
With two outs in the eighth, Comeaux looped a single to left-center field. Then Molly Brossart did the same thing, setting the stage for Slama.
"It was do or die," she said. "I was ecstatic. I knew Shawna was going to score, because she's one of the fastest freshmen we have."
Sabino's Kaity Sitzman scattered three hits and induced 12 groundouts in the win.

● Canyon del Oro 15, Glendale Apollo 0: At CDO, Kenzie Fowler allowed one hit and struck out 11 as the No. 1 Dorados began defense of their state title with a mercy-rule win.
Taylor Watkins sparked CDO with a three-run, inside-the-park homer.
The Dorados sent nine to the plate in the second and third innings, scoring five runs each time.
"It's always good when a team can get ahead that early. It makes your job that much easier," Fowler said.
