TEMPE — Rincon/University boys swimming coach Mike Ward had not seen the final team results when they were handed to him by a reporter.
He might have preferred not to see them at all.
Scottsdale Horizon edged out Rincon 360 1/2 to 351 to win the Class 5A-II state championship Saturday afternoon at ASU's Mona Plummer Aquatic Complex in Tempe.
Ward figured it would be close, but was surprised his team fell short of its goal.
"It's disappointing, very definitely," Ward said. "Horizon just really stepped up and swam well."
Rincon won five events, but it still wasn't enough to catch the Huskies.
Bobby Koubratoff led the charge by winning the 200-yard freestyle (1 minute 41.09 seconds) and 500 free events (4:37.35). He earned All-America status in both events.
Koubratoff was also part of Rincon's winning 200 free relay and 400 free relay teams.
"He just had a super day. I'm so happy for him," Ward said. "He's worked really hard for this. You can't do much more than he did, that's for sure."
Rincon's Jeff Amlee won the 50 free in 21.29 seconds, 1.32 seconds faster than Nick McAdams of Glendale Ironwood.
Ironwood Ridge finished in fourth place and Mountain View came in sixth in the 5A-II boys event.
On the girls side, Rincon scored 198 1/2 points to finish in third place behind winner Phoenix Pinnacle (383) and Horizon (330 1/2).
Ironwood Ridge was sixth place with 142.5 points.
Ironwood Ridge junior Chloe Buser had the best individual finish of any female swimmer from Southern Arizona. Buser finished tied for third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.67.
In 5A-I boys competition, Sierra Vista Buena was the top local team in 16th place. Phoenix Brophy won the title.
Buena's Ryan Sloss finished fourth in the 50 free with a time of 21.47, good enough for All-America status.
