Canyon del Oro did not need many hits to defeat Ironwood Ridge 4-0 in the Class 4A-I softball state quarterfinals Tuesday at Hillenbrand Stadium.
The Dorados used aggressive base running — and they had Kenzie Fowler on the mound.
In the third inning, the Dorados scored three runs, without a hit, on three walks, timely base running, a fielding error and a fielder's choice by Kandice Glynn, which drove in Brittany Morales from third.
CDO finished with three hits, including a double by Bree Ray in the sixth inning.
"It's easy when you have runners on to want to start chasing pitches," said CDO coach Amy Swiderski. "(But) the girls did a phenomenal job of being patient, because in reality, we'll take a walk. We want hits, but we'll take a walk."
The game was a pitchers' duel. Ironwood Ridge pitchers Aletheia Swihart and Kelsey Groff did not allow CDO a hit until the fifth inning, and Fowler took a no-hitter into the seventh.
"I knew I had a no-hitter, but it wasn't a big deal in my mind. Just keeping the zero on the board, zero runs, and keeping us on top was the bigger picture," said Fowler.
The only thorn in Fowler's side all night was Morgan Long, who reached base on an error in the fourth, then broke up Fowler's no-hitter with an infield single with no outs in the seventh.
The game was the first time Fowler had played at Hillenbrand Stadium since committing to the UA in October.
CDO will plays Glendale Cactus in the semifinals Thursday at the Rose Mofford Softball Complex in Phoenix at 6:30 p.m. It is a rematch of last year's state title game, won by Cactus 1-0.
